Rising majestically above the city of Arusha, Mount Meru is Tanzania’s second-highest peak and one of East Africa’s most underrated trekking destinations. Standing at 4,566 meters, this dormant volcano offers a quieter and less crowded alternative to Mount Kilimanjaro, while still delivering breathtaking scenery and a rewarding summit experience. Its fertile slopes are cloaked in dense forests, making it a striking landmark that dominates the surrounding landscape.

The mountain lies within Arusha National Park, which means your trek begins in the midst of rich wildlife habitats. As you ascend, you may encounter giraffes, buffaloes, colobus monkeys, and a wide variety of bird species, creating a unique blend of hiking and safari. The trail passes through lush rainforests, open heathlands, and rocky alpine zones, offering constantly changing scenery that keeps the journey exciting from start to finish.

Reaching the summit, known as Socialist Peak, rewards climbers with spectacular sunrise views over the surrounding plains and a clear sight of Mount Kilimanjaro in the distance. The climb is typically completed over three to four days, making it ideal for acclimatization before tackling higher peaks or as a standalone adventure. With its diverse landscapes, abundant wildlife, and fewer crowds, Mount Meru delivers an authentic and unforgettable Tanzanian trekking experience.
